2015
CIRCUS VISITS

#1  KORA SHRINE CIRCUS
Produced by James & Shirley Hamid

     Augusta Civic Center
     Augusta, ME
     April 25
I got up early to leave for my first circus of 2015. I drove around 150 miles in 2 and a half hours to get to Augusta. I arrived at the end of intermission and stayed thru out the second show of 3 for the day. First person that spotted me was Chicago's Larry Rothbard than Shirley Hamid who was in charge of this show as Jim was doing a show at the Melha Shrine in West Springfield, Mass

The Kora Shrine program is one of the best as it is only 84 pages, but they have over 8 pages of pictures and interesting facts about the circus and the cost is only: DONATIONS. Most Shrine programs have only 2 to 4 pages out of over 200 pages, and the price ranges from DONATIONS to $6. (KORA has a great book and the price is right!)

The 62nd Annual Shrine Circus with introduction of the Illustrious Potentate following is the Color Guards Presentation and Playing of our National Anthem.  The show is about to start with Johnny Rocket ending up with his jump rope routine. Ringmaster Peter Sturgis is introduced and the show starts with 4 girls on the Spanish Web. The next display was the performing tigers of Doug Terrannova presented by AJ. Now comes a light pitch. Next was the Bileas (Elena and Viorel) and a fantastic quick change routine. Johnny Rocket comes out with his picnic routine, another pitch by Peter for the Shrine souvenirs and than 2 rings of Hula Hoops with Elena and Ashley. To end out the first half was the Rowe's Riders of Jason and Tyler and their skills of BMX riding and jumps joint by Johnny Rocket. Now it is intermission time.

The second half overture by Musical Director Larry Rothbard with David and James juggling.
Miss Ashley Star and the flames on the lyria. Ashley in the middle of 2. This was a tremendous act as the lighting made it look like fire. Hamid Circus now presents 2 of the Miller Herd of performing elephants under the direction of Omar. Bunny and Liddie was the 2 laadies. I have to say watching closely that Omar never once used the Angus Hook on either one during the performance. At all times the hook was in his hand. Now it was Peter Sturgis turn to host the Illumination Challenge of circus lights in the audiences. Which side one? Now the featured act, The motor madness of the Rowe's Rider (Jason and Tyler) on FX machines and interupted once again by Johnny Rocket. This act was brought to it's feet by the sensational announcing of what was happening, types of jumps made by the glamorus Galaxy Girl. Now it was time for the Gala Grandiose Good-Bye by all.

This was a good show with nothing that wowed me this year as previous years. The biggest appluad getters was the BMX and FX acts. Some how the younger set really enjoys this type of acts even in a circus.  I mist a few thing that I like as the dropping of the flag at the end or the hanging strands of lights at the corners. But I love the lighted ring curb. One complaint was the tinny sound of Peter's announcing may have needed more bass.

#2  ANAH SHRINE CIRCUS
      Circus United produced
      Cross Insurance Center
      Bangor, ME
      May 2

On my birthday I attended the 2PM Anah Shrine Circus at the New Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine . This was Circus United's first production in Maine with Fletcher Runyan and Shane Johnsons (RJ Productions) at the helm.

Before I get into the show. This was the best overall show that I have scene at the Anah Shrine date in years. Only the second time for elephant rides and the first time in years we have had elepants at this date. A whole new ring and LED spot lights made the biggest difference to this one ring show. To make things even better the floor of this large arena was filled with rides for the very first time ever which included: elephants & camel rides, circus train, inflatable slide, face painting. Also, there was some live music (drummer) with the canned music.

The show featured Elephants, camels, tigers, dogs, a horse which is an old fashion circus. The first time since Wayne McCary produced show has the Shrine had so many animals on each performance. Extra live reports on TV about the return of elephants I feel had a big impact with filling the building. Even former Brewer's mayor agreed this was the best show in years.

I did not get the correct order of acts as I forgot my pen to write down the order. The show started 20 minutes late because of the crowd coming in. First half ran 55 minutes with a 30 minute intermission and a 35 minute second half. This was far better than years prior of an hour of acts and a 45 minute intermission as I have stated years ago. This year their was rides for the customers to fill the intermission time. Long lines upstairs that was trying to get food and beverages from the auditorium concessions that can not handle the crowds. (This is the auditorium issue and not that of the Shriners or Producers of the Show).

The show ran some what like this. Opening with Johnny Peers build up, National Anthem, Overture,Terranova's Tigers, Comedy of Johnny Peers, The Chiffons of Susan Ashton, Juggling by the Sesational TJ Howle and a display of light up Hula Hoops by Gayle. Anah Clowns with the JC Pennies joke, 2 aerial lyra's and the Muttville Comic with his rescued dogs.Next came Sponge Bob Square Pants came out saying this was the end of the first half and it was time to check out the rides for the intermission. The second half started out with the Ashton's foot juggling, TJ Howle and his unicycles ending up with the world's smallest bicycle. Next was 2 ladies on the spanish web with Susan Vidbel in the middle on her single trap. The motorcycle incline of Enrique Valencia was next which I feel had the biggest audience reception and than the biggest stars of the show came out 2 of the Miller Herd from Hugo, Oklahoma under the direction on Omar. I can say he is not one of the handlers that I know that is not Hook Happy. As 97% of the time the hook of the angus is in his hand. Now the Grand Finally of performers and Shrine clowns. This whole show was under the Ringmaster Charlie Van Buskirk who has been the host of this circus here in Bangor for 44 years. For those that never got their rides during the preshow and intermission they were opened for a last chance ride.

I want o say Thank-you! to Johnny Peers, TJ and Gayle Howle and Shane Johnson for a wonderful circus birthday.

The best Anah Shrine Circus ever, was this years produced show!

Jim and Teppa with their self contained show plays many agriculture fair thru out the country. A well received show at all the venues they play each year. This is a great educational show which is about 20 minutes in lenght performing up to 3 times daily. A little difference from the winter circus route they play.

#9)       CARLA WALLENDA
            Nortern District Fair
            Cadillac, MI
            Aug 18
To my surprise I came across a legend at the Northern District Fair in Cadillac. I could not believe Carla Wallenda was still performing her 100+ foot sway pole act. I did not get to see her perform as she was climbing to the top of her pole a rain and wind storm came up so she had to come down. As Carla was climbing her husband Mike was walking on his high wire. Later we had a lot of jack potting of years past as we first met at the Big E in Springfield, Mass when I was with the Hurricane Hell Drivers back in the 70's. The last time I saw Carla was at the Alabama State Fair in Birmingham where Rick was driving stakes on the football field for the high wire and hit a waterline for the field springler. If you get the chance you want to make sure you see this great performers as there are very few sway pole artist in the world.

Mike performing on the high wire at Cadillac Michigan's Northern District Fair.

#10)      WOMBOLD'S AMAZING ANIMALS
             County Fair
             Midland, MI
             Aug 19

Once again I ran across Bob Moyer in Michigan. A great all animal presentation for any agricultural fair.

#11)       ELEPHANT ENCOUNTER
              County Fair
              Mt Morris, MI
Bill and Cindy Morris has a great educational elephant presentation that I have scene many times at many different venues thru out the country. If you want to learn about elephants you need to see their show. They will let you know the difference between Asian and African elephants. One might think because they are playing fairs they would be doing elephant rides all day but they don't. They only give rides after their performance. Shows are done 2 to 3 times per day. At Mt Morris young Billy was there selling there novilties.

#12)       KENT FAMILY CIRCUS
              County Fair
              MI
              Aug 28
Once again I ran across Victor and his family. A different performance than earlier in August. The only problem it was put in a corner of the fairgrounds and very few bleacher seats to accomodate the crowd the show brings in for their performance.

#13)       WALKER BROTHERS CIRCUS
              New York State Fair
              Syracuse, NY
              Aug 31

#14)        CIRCUS HOLLYWOOD  (set-up)
               Vermont State Fair
               Rutland, VT
               Sept 1
As I was headed home from my summer tour I stopped into the Vermont State Fair as everyone was setting up for the fair. To my surprise this year the fair had such a small carnival, Serge was setting up his massive tent where the main carnival had been set-up for years instead of the infield.

Just down from the tent was Serge's petting zoo and other animals exhibits and his Perisian Horse Ring show.

#15  BIG E CIRCUS SPECTACULAR
        Royal Hanneford presentation
        West Springfield, Mass
        Sept 30, 2015
On a wet Wednesday I went to the BIG E one of the first things I did was go to the Circus Spectacular produced by the Royal Hanneford Circus Productions. Spectators were slow to come into the dry tent for the 1PM show. At show time I would say there was about 80 % capacity.

The show started off with a light show under the direction of Noel Landa and musical beginning by Maestro Larry Stout and then the intro of Celebrated Ringmaster of Dinny McGuire who introduced the first act of the performance of the high wire heroes, The Lopez Family.  Next was Roney Gomez with his juggling and manipulation of bouncing balls.

After Roney was Neecha Braun and her dobberman canines who was filmed for season 8 of America's Got Talent in New Orleans. I love her income of riding on a motorcycle with the sidecar. Here comes Grand Ma with her Treadmill routine. Than off to the aerial extraordinaire of the sensational Sadrak. Now it was time for the Shenyang Imperial Cyclist. An impressive act of many dissapplines. The featured act of the show was the celestial sensation of Irene and Alfonso Espana's Space-Star Rocket. With the smoke and lighting this was a spectacular attraction which brings us to the grand finale of all performers saluting all in the audience.

In the back-yard a memorial was set-up by Nellie and crew of the circus for Tommy and Struppi Hanneford, on the spot that the Hanneford had parked for years during the fair while producing the BIG E SUPER CIRCUS

R.I.P. Struppi & Tommy your memories will always be with us when we go to the BIG E.
